We love the lighter shade of blue leather that has been used for one of the middle card pockets - an attractive design feature that adds a point of difference to this wallet.

Each wallet comes packaged in a high-quality signature blue presentation box.

Each Kinuya AWA AI piece is carefully handcrafted from high quality cow hide. Because leather is a natural product, there will be slight variations in the hide that differs between pieces.

About Kinuya AWA AI Japan Blue Leather:

Traditionally, the dying and finishing processes used for textiles and leather use a  lot of chemicals. Many companies are rethinking their processes and moving towards more sustainable processes. One such company is Japanese brand, Kinuya, who are renowned for their AWA AI premium leather goods. However, Kinuya's point of difference is their dying process. They use the leaves from the indigo plant (indigofera polygonum) to produce a natural dye. This natural indigo dyeing method know as "Ai-zome" has been used in Japan since the 5th century. The specific colour produced from this process is known as 'Japan Blue'. The 'Ai-zome' technique results in a clear, deep colour.

How is the dye produced?

1.  Ai seeds are planted in March (they are planted on a day called 'Taian', the luckiest day on the six-day Buddhist calendar).

2. The ai leaves are harvested in July and August

3. The harvested leaves are put through a cutting machine, which removes the stems. The leaves are then dried in the sun in a process called 'Aikonashi' and stored.

4. In Autumn, the stored leaves are put on a bed for leaves, called a 'Nedoko' and are mixed with water in a process called 'Kirikaeshi'. The leaves are mixed with the water many times until mid-February.

5. The Ai-zome dye is fermented slowly, then the leather skins are added to the dye bath. The number of times the skin is exposed to the dye determines the depth of colour.

Most of Kinuya's products are embossed with their unique family crest - a small rabbit.

This beautiful range has been produced using the highest quality leather via sustainable processes.

My wife has exceptional taste and bought me this card holder as a 'congratulations' gift when I received a promotion at work recently. I'm now hooked on this brand and will be dropping hints to my wife to buy more of these great products when my birthday comes around. (Posted on 7/6/2014)
