The best advice my mum gave me: Meiyoko Taylor, author & personal development coach

“The best thing my mum taught me was that I was capable of doing anything I put my mind to as long as I stayed true to who I am and worked hard at what I wanted to accomplish”. That has stayed with me and has proven to be true many times over! I implement this in my personal life as well as the life of my clients in business.”

The best advice my mum gave me: Chris Dyson, author

“The best thing my mum ever taught me was not to let circumstances get in the way of going after what I wanted in life and to believe I could achieve whatever I wanted. Being born with a serious heart condition, having open heart surgery at just 30 months old, experiencing over 100 cardiac arrests in a single day at age 7, receiving a pacemaker implant and then having a deadbeat dad walk away from our life, certainly could have given me reason to become a sheltered, meek person who felt sorry for myself, but my mum would never have allowed this and it made me who I am today – A successful professional hockey coach, heavily involved in the game I was never excepted to play because of my ‘condition’.” – Chris Dyson

As an author and educator of coaches, children and parents, I am now an advocate for the ethical advancement of kids in minor sports and I am developing an online educational system for coaches that will allow us to accomplish the goal of helping 50,000 children and coaches in sports to better enjoy the game, stay within it longer and learn lessons that will enhance their lives forever. All because my mom taught me to go after what I wanted and believe in my ability to do anything. www.authorchrisdyson.com

The best advice my mum gave me: Amanda Palm, www.mindipalm.com

“The best thing my mum taught me was how to appreciate the value of money. Rather than dishing out money like a slot machine, my mother got me into doing chores at a very early age – things like laundry, vacuuming, gardening and even sewing. We received pocket money for ‘work’ to help my sister and I understand that money isn’t free. It taught us a huge lesson and we both teach that to our children today :)”

The best advice my mum gave me: Sarah Donges, Box For Monkeys

We had SO much fun posting our last Father’s Day blog series, ‘The best thing my dad taught me’ that we couldn’t miss the opportunity of doing this for Mother’s Day too! In the run up to Mother’s Day, our guest contributors will be sharing some of the best advice their mums have given them. We hope this makes you feel as good as it made us feel…

“The best thing my mum taught me was…that woman can do anything. My mum was told by her father that she could only be a teacher or secretary, her mum had no say. Mum raised her three daughters with the belief that men and woman are equal and we can do what ever we want.” – Sarah Donges

Sarah’s company, Box For Monkeys sends out fun, educational and screen-free activity boxes to kids. Learn more at www.boxformonkeys.com

My Favourite Quote: Hemda Mizrahi, www.lifeandcareerchoices.com

“In the midst of winter, I found there was, within me, an invincible summer.”
– Albert Camus

As a high schooler, I had a poster on my bedroom wall with this quote from Albert Camus. I love how these words evoke a warmth, brightness, and optimism that offer encouragement when times are dark and hard, especially during long stretches of turmoil or ambiguity. It’s a reminder that, beneath the stillness and heaviness of frozen ground, icy waters, and bare trees, vitality exists in the workings of nature. We are gifted with inner resources that are fertile if we decide to cultivate them. This is the underlying premise of coaching and consulting as I see it. The capability of an “invincible summer” exists and needs to be engaged, rather than created.

I recently came across additional lines of this quote that were not included on my bedroom poster, which elaborate on Camus’s philosophy:

“And that makes me happy. For it says that no matter how hard the world pushes against me, within me, there’s something stronger – something better, pushing right back.”

Camus was a French philosopher, author, and political journalist, as well as a producer of theater and a playwright. He was born in French Algeria in 1913 and later lived in France. He passed away in 1960, at the age of 46.
