Cake of the week: House-warming cake

A few weeks ago we moved house. If I’m honest, it was a pretty stressful event with two young children added to the mix! And I’m still unpacking boxes…

However, the whole ordeal was made more bearable when a gorgeous friend presented this beautiful homemade rainbow layer cake (inspired by this post) as a housewarming gift.

It was absolutely delicious, and sustained me for breakfast, lunch and dinner for the first couple of days;-)

Why I love it:

  • I’m a huge fan of the tonal rainbow look – it’s a beautiful surprise when you cut the cake open.
  • I adore the handwritten message.
  • It was made with love and cheered me up after a stressful moving experience.
  • It was delicious (and it fed me for two days!)

Cake of the week: Poop Emoji Cupcakes

It’s official that Emojis have taken over our lives when the poop Emoji makes an appearance as a cupcake…

Why we love them:

  • You have to admit, they’re super-cute – once you get over what they are…
  • These would be a humorous cake for a teen-birthday.
  • They’re pretty easy to make – chocolate cupcake, chocolate icing applied with a piping bag and edible eyes.
  • These would be fun as part of an “Emoji-themed” party.
  • Great for guys or gals

Cake of the week: Beauty and the Beast Cake

Sometimes you come across a cake that is so incredible you just can’t work out how it has been made. This Beauty and the Beast Cake is one of these cakes!

I challenged my friend to make this cake for her daughter’s 2nd birthday last weekend…yes, I’m a mean friend!;-) This cake defies gravity!

Anyone ever attempted anything like this?

Cake of the week: Cactus cupcakes

These are almost to adorable to eat! What a sweet idea, and some very clever cake-making skills…

Why we love them:
  • Succulents and cactus are actually really on-trend at the moment as pot plants, so why not cupcakes?!
  • They look adorable served on this vintage-style platter.
  • We love the fact that each one is different, and that some have flowers and others don’t.
  • These would be great for either a guy or gal.

Cake of the week: Steak cake

Ok, so this one is a little too real for my liking, but I do know some men who’d go for steak over cake any day…

Why we love it:
  • I can’t even begin to imagine how this cake has been created – the colour and texture are so incredibly real!
  • We love the addition of the broccoli and cutlery.
  • This cake would go down a treat with a meat-loving man.

Cake of the week: Beer Tower Cupcakes

What man wouldn’t like a Beer Tower on their birthday? Now top this tower with cupcakes and you’re onto every man’s dream birthday cake!

Why to love it:

  • This would be super-easy to create – beer: check. Cupcakes: check!
  • You can completely personalise this cake by the type of beer you choose, as well as cake flavour/colour.
  • You could pick the same type of beer, or a selection of different ones. Just make sure the cans are uniform size/shape so they stack together and are the same height.
  • You could play around coordinating the colour of the cupcake icing to the colour of the beer cans.
  • This would work for other canned drinks too.

Cake of the week: Sprinkle number birthday cake

There’s an infectious fun associated with sprinkles. Maybe it’s the pleasant memories of childhood birthday parties, or just the rainbow of cheerful colours. These sprinkle birthday cakes are super simple to make and would make an awesome cake for anyone, of any age.

Image from www.buzzfeed.com

Why we love them:
  • Each of these cakes demonstrate an ’embossed’ or ‘debossed’ way of using sprinkles. The first image shows how you can ‘block out’ the area you don’t want covered with a template. The second image uses a number 2 stencil to pop sprinkles in.
  • These colours would work well for children and adults of any age, male or female.
  • You could experiment with the colour of the base icing. White will of course make the sprinkles stand out, but pale pink, yellow, or blue would also look good too.
  • You can apply this decorating technique to a cake of any size or shape.

Cake of the week: Funfetti birthday cake

If you’re looking for a fun, colourful birthday cake, then this Funfetti birthday cake is the one! Who’d have thought the simple addition of Hundreds and Thousands could create such a  cheery, colourful cake?!

Images and recipe from www.sallysbakingaddiction.com

Why we love it:

  • The recipe is SIMPLE. It’s effectively a simple butter cake, so you could also use your favourite butter cake recipe and add sprinkles. However, the ‘secret weapon’ is the extra vanilla in this recipe.
  • Rather than a cake, you could also make cupcakes.
  • This is a fabulous cake that will make any child or adult smile.

Cool Cakes: 40th Birthday Cake

It’s fun to (politely) tease people as they get older…especially if they’re older than you!
Why we love it:
  • Ok, so 40 isn’t actually that old (I say that as I’m not far away from the big 40!), but this cake is actually funny because it’s a gross exaggeration. If you presented an 80-year-old with this cake, somehow it wouldn’t be so funny…
  • It’s so realistic! Not sure of the technique they’ve used to write on the cake, but it’s very clear and neat!
  • The actual cake shape is quite simple – just three round layers (which would feed a few people). Three layers also mean you could have three different cake flavours, or even a gluten-free portion to cater for all guests. The effectiveness is in the decoration.
  • This cake appears to be for a man, but you could modify it for a woman.

Cool cakes: Heineken Cake

When looking for inspiration for a cake, I can imagine the person who made this asking themselves: “What does he like? Beer. What type of beer? Heineken.” And what a great way to come up with an idea for a cake the recipient will love!
Image from

Why we love it:
  • This cake is perfectly decorated – the colours are clear and bright and the text is beautifully formed.
  • What man wouldn’t love a cake like this?
  • The shape of the cake is simple, so no fancy baking tins required.
  • The fondant icing hides a multitude of sins. Your cake doesn’t need to be perfect as this type of icing works miracles by forming a ‘blanket’ over the cake whilst keeping it moist.
