“Love puts the fun in together, the sad in apart, and the joy in a heart” – Unknown

Home-made sweets treats would have to be a very close second to a gift or a nice meal on Valentine’s Day.

We reckon your Valentine would love these Trio of Tea Infused Macarons, Chuck-Berry tea Cupcakes, and Rose with French Vanilla Marshmallows.

Garnet Gifts

Garnet is the birthstone of January. Whilst Garnet come in many colours, it is most well-know for its rich, deep red colour and linked to purity, truth, love and compassion. Here is some interesting things you might not know about Garnet:

  • Garnet is a stone associated with successful business. If business is a bit slow, pop three or more Garnets on your desk.
  • Sleeping with a Garnet under your pillow is said to cure depression.
  • Popularity and increased self-esteem are said to come from wearing Garnets as jewellery.
  • Garnets are also said to protect you when travelling, and bring constancy to friendships.
  • Garnet is also said to have healing properties – especially for the thyroid and spleen – if held over the area.
  • It can help increase sex drive.

Five ways to reuse your old Christmas cards

I’m looking with dismay at my beautiful display of Christmas cards. I know Christmas is over, but I can’t quite bear to take them down yet, especially since some are handmade.

Every year I’m faced with the same predicament, so this year I thought I would try and find some creative ways to reuse our Christmas cards. Here are a few of my favourite ideas, which could also be applied to other cards throughout the year…

1. Make gift tags for next year
All you need to do is develop a template shape that you like (you can use a commercial gift tag from this year) to trace around on the back of your Christmas cards. Simply cut out your tags, add string or ribbon of your choice (you can be as fancy as you like here) and then stash the tags with any left-over gift wrap and decorations for next year. You can find full instructions at www.thegoodstuffguide.com

2. Make Placemats
Simply cut out and layout or collage your cards together on an A3 or A4 piece of paper, glue down then laminate. You can also cut out and display the messages in the cards – your family will love reminiscing every time they use these special placemats.

3. Make a gift pouch
These little pouches are ideal for giving jewellery or other small gifts.
See how to make one here

4. Make a Christmas wreath
All you need to make this beautiful wreath is:
1. A stack of colourful Christmas cards
2. A holly leaf stencil/template
3. A hot glue gun
4. Toothpicks
5. A Styrofoam wreath

5. Cut them up so your kids can practice their weaving skills
Kids will love working with the bright colours of the cards, and card is a lot easier to weave with than paper. Here’s what to do

The benefits of believing in Santa…

…as well as gift solutions for ALL the men you need to buy for this Christmas

Whilst going through a box of childhood treasures the other day, I came across a piece of evidence supporting the age-old childhood debate that Santa isn’t real. It was my old Santa notebook, that I left out with the beer and cookies (for Santa), as well as a carrot (for the reindeer) each year.

Every Christmas, Santa would faithfully leave me a little note (along with an empty beer glass, cookie crumbs and a carrot stalk) saying he hoped I enjoyed my presents and that I had a good Christmas. One Christmas, I realised that Santa had the same handwriting as my dad. Naïvely, I thought to myself, “Wow, Santa really is a cool guy – he’s even got the same handwriting as my dad!” Fortunately, this didn’t give the game away and I still believe in Santa 😉

Believing in Santa definitely works in my favour when it comes to the amount of presents I receive each year…although I think my husband might be onto me…

Anyway, I challenge you to believe in Santa this Christmas (even if you didn’t last year). Just write that Wish List, stick it on the fridge (or post it to the North Pole) and see what happens.

Here are a few ideas to add to your list (or someone else’s) while you’re at it, along with a helpful 20% discount…

SPECIAL OFFER: 20% off STORE-WIDE

Kinuya AWA AI Japan Blue Leather

Traditionally, the dying and finishing processes used for textiles and leather use a  lot of chemicals. Many companies are now rethinking their processes and moving towards more sustainable practices. One such company is Japanese brand, Kinuya, who are renowned for their AWA AI premium leather goods. Kinuya’s point of difference is their dying process. They use the leaves from the indigo plant (indigofera polygonum) to produce a natural dye. This natural indigo dyeing method know as “Ai-zome” has been used in Japan since the 5th century. The ‘Ai-zome’ technique results in a clear, deep colour, known as ‘Japan Blue’. The Kinuya range consists of a unique collection of leather goods dyed ‘Japan Blue’, using this traditional, environmentally conscious method.

YMMN

YMMN is a family-run manufacturer of  leather goods established in 1948 by Mr Yamada Haruhiko. Today the company is owned and run by Mr Yamada’s son. The family have an established reputation as high-quality leather manufacturers in Japan’s leather goods industry. All of YMMN’s products are made in Japan by skilled craftsmen at their factory located in Tokyo. It takes the craftsmen approximately 3 hours to complete a men’s wallet.

Our 10 Favourite Father’s Day Gift Wrapping Ideas

Beautiful gift wrapping doesn’t need to be expensive – or boring. You can personalize a simple gift with some creative wrapping techniques. Here are a few of our favourites – just in time for Father’s Day…

1. Father’s Day gift-wrap apron:

This is a clever, cost effective way of combining two gifts into one and also adding a cool card:

We love using craft paper as wrapping paper (it’s cheap and environmentally friendly!), especially when it’s jazzed up with a bright ribbon or jute twine

This idea is from the Sew Many Ways blog

2. Gorgeous Father’s Day boxes:

3. Chic black and white:

The contrast of black and white gift wrapping against natural craft paper is a really striking look.

4. Newspaper, but not as you know it:

Whilst newspaper is a cheap and effective form of wrapping paper, you can make it look less ‘tight-arse’ with the addition of a beautiful trim such as this black and white ribbon. Image from May Arts.

Red is also a gorgeous contrast colour against black and white.

5. Stamps are back!

The good old craft paper has come in handy again when stamped with some old-school rubber stamps. You could also apply this idea to wrapping paper for other occasions (birthday, anniversary – whatever) and stamp the recipient’s name on the paper:

6. Pegs aren’t just for clothes…

They’re also a nifty way of attaching a gift card to a present…

7. Tied up:

If you purchase a beautiful tie for dad, why not make it the hero of your gift wrapping too?

8. Personalize with family pics:

A touching way of personalizing gift wrapping for your recipient

9. A clever gift-wrap idea up your sleeve:

What a fun way to present a bottle of wine:)

10. Beer, made better:
