Handmade Father’s Day gift: Nuts and Bolts Mix

You can’t go past a classic nut mix when it comes to homemade treats for blokes, especially when it looks this tasty…

Handmade ‘Nuts and Bolts’ Mix

Why we love it:
  • Who doesn’t love a nut or nibble mix (unless of course you’re allergic to nuts!)
  • You can customise your mix to suit your recipient, using high-quality products.
  • This is a thoughtful, yet inexpensive gift.
  • You can have fun with how you present your mix – in a tin as above, in a basket, bottle, plastic container, etc. Hand-write your own label, create a label on the computer, or get the kids to draw a label.

Handmade Father’s Day gift: Golf Tee Jar

You’re about to tee for for a round of golf. Clubs? Check. Golf ball? Check. Tee?…Rummaging through your golf bag for a golf tee before you’re about to tee off is frustrating. This handy jar will ensure that dad won’t run out of golf tees for a while…

Golf tees in a jar – a useful, inexpensive gift for Father’s Day

Why we love it:
  • This is a super-useful gift for golfing dads
  • It’s inexpensive – you can easily pick up a pack of golf tees from a sporting shop for very little expense, and the jar is a recycled jam or sauce jar.
  • You can hand-write your own label, use a Dymo Label-Maker, create one on the computer, or use a swing-tag and tie it around the neck of the bottle with some lovely ribbon or jute twine.
  • You could choose a selection of different coloured Tees, or write his initials on the top of the Tee so he can easily recognise his Tees.
  • You can experiment with putting the Tees in other things – little fabric bags, other interesting boxes you can find from craft shops, plastic containers, etc.

Do you know a man who plays golf who’d love a gift like this?

Handmade gift of the week: House-warming gift idea

A house-warming gift is a great way to welcome someone new to the neighbourhood, whilst making a positive first impression. Here’s one we found that makes us wish the Smiths were our neighbours!

Possibly the best neighbour gift ever!

Why we love it:
  • I don’t know many people who wouldn’t love receiving a bottle of wine, but even if they don’t drink, it’s always handy having a bottle of wine in the cupboard to offer to guest or friends that pop around.
  • This is a particularly thoughtful drink for new neighbours that are also renovating.
  • The addition of the hammer is funny, but also practical – something you’d definitely use after moving into a new house and need for the odd repair job or putting up pictures.
  • The little note included with this gift looks lovely and natural and personal since it’s handwritten. You could use any type of gift card here, but the ‘swing-tag’ type with a string work particularly well.
Have you ever given or received a ‘neighbour gift’?

Handmade gift of the week: Framed toy cars

I haven’t met a little boy who isn’t obsessed with cars (or a big one, for that matter!)
The only problem with this gift is that it looks so fun the kids will want to get the cars out of the frames and play with them!
Image from www.cozycottagecute.com

Why we love it:

  • This is a great way to re-purpose old cars you might have at home or pick up from a market, garage sale or second hand shop.
  • These look great on walls of a little boy’s room
  • They are a great way of turning old ‘favourite’ cars you can’t bring yourself to throw away into something beautiful, interesting and unique.
  • Play around with the colour of cars and frames that you choose – you could go for contrasting colours to make a bold statement, or tonal colours that match each other or existing decor.
  • Don’t limit yourself to cars – this type of display could be done for any type of object – anything from dolls for a little girl’s room to Nanna’s spoon collection to ceramic figurines. Precious object d’art will also be protected from kids/pets/life when displayed behind glass on the wall like this.
What objects would you choose to frame in this way?

Handmade gift of the week: Light bulb Terrariums

This is one handmade gift idea that’s made it to the top of my ‘wish list’ – who wouldn’t love receiving one of these little bulbs of joy?

Image from www.coco29.com
Why we love it:
  • They look simple to make, and inexpensive with limited materials: bulb, plant, growing medium and string. A word of caution though, choose your bulb carefully. You want a good quality one that doesn’t look like it’s going to crumble in your hand as you’re working with it. We would also recommend wearing a pair of gloves to protect your hand when handling the glass, in case it shatters.
  • Who doesn’t love plants? This would be a great gift for anyone – men, women, children. You can select your plant and growing medium to suit your recipient. Plain white Perlite or little rocks would be suitable for an adult, but maybe brightly coloured stones and the inclusion of a little toy, like a fairy would make this magic for a child.
  • You could make a few and cluster them together, like a living mobile in your home or children’s bedroom. This takes the concept of hanging plants to the next level!
  • Terrariums have made a revival lately, so this is a very ‘on trend’ gift and home decorating idea.

Where would you hang one of these in your home?

Handmade gift of the week: DIY Frozen Fruit and Flower Ice Bucket

A bottle of wine is a popular gift that many people will appreciate. However, the trick to gifting a memorable bottle of wine (apart from buying a wine that tastes good) lies in the way it’s presented. This handmade ice bucket would be a wonderful host/hostess gift for a party during the warmer months…

Image from www.ehow.com

Why we love it:
  • It’s easy and inexpensive to make – you just need to allow a little time between each step for the ice to freeze. Here are the instructions on how to make it.
  • You can choose any combination of flowers, herbs, fruit, or anything else you think will freeze. You could use bright, contrasting colours, or tonal pastel colours, depending on the occasion.
  • This makes an impressive (and practical) table centre-piece. Imagine this on your Christmas table with gorgeous Christmas colours. If you’ve got time, you could even make two or three to hold different bottles of wine.
  • You can make any sized bucket – even one to hold multiple bottles. The only limitations are the buckets you have available, and the size of your freezer!
What flowers and fruit would you use in your bucket?

Handmade gift of the week: How to use old books

There is an abundance of second hand books at markets and in charity shops these days. The good news is that even the ones that aren’t best sellers can be put to good use – and not by reading them. Here are a couple of crafty ways to turn the pages of old books into a unique handmade gift that your recipient will treasure forever…

These cute hearts would make a great card too

These delicate butterflies would make a delicate artwork for a little girl’s bedroom

Why we love these:
  • These artworks are stylish and timeless
  • This is a great way to recycle old books, or even newspapers
  • You can customise and personalise each artwork, depending on the shapes and colours you choose.
  • Experiment with different coloured/shaped frames – white, black, natural wood, bold red, etc.
  • How beautiful would these creations look as gift cards and gift tags? The options are endless and limited only by your imagination!

Handmade gift of the week: Date Night Jar

Every couple needs one of these! And if you don’t have one, this is a great gift idea for your partner’s next birthday…

Why we love it:
1. It’s thoughtful – you can show how much you know and care about your partner by adding activities that they like to do to the jar. You could even include the names of your favourite restaurants or take-away places.
2. You can have fun with the colour theme – use coloured popsicle sticks or keep them plain for a more organic look. You could pop them in a glass, mason jar, wooden box or any other type of vessel that you could imagine.
3. You could even make a jar like this for the kids or a close friend and get them to pick an activity the next time you can’t decide what to do or where to meet up.

Handmade gift of the week: Cork sign for your bar or mancave

Every home bar or mancave needs a great sign, and this one’s a beauty! It’s eye-catching, and a great way to use up wine bottle corks…

Here’s why you need one:
1. It’s easy to make – simply find the letters and font you want and print them out to use as a template to glue your corks together.
2. The look has a natural, organic feel, but is versatile enough to work with a sleek, modern interior, or a traditional interior.
3. It’s a great way of reusing corks that would otherwise get thrown away.
4. The options are endless and you’re only limited by the number of corks you have.

Handy Home Tips: How to update your decor with rope

Natural rope or twine is an inexpensive element you can use to ‘make-over’ lots of different home accessories. The other great thing about the natural feel of rope is that it complements quite a few different interior styles, such as the coastal/beach look, as well as rustic/vintage looks. It’s a really versatile material that will also blend well with lots of different colour palettes.

Here are a couple of ideas of how to use rope to makeover a couple of items most people have at home…

1. Rope Frame

A basic, inexpensive wooden or plastic frame can be turned into a unique frame with some rope and a glue gun

Full instructions and images from www.celebrations.com

Why we love it:
  • Kids’ rooms, living room – wherever – this is a versatile look that will suit most interiors
  • It’s inexpensive – you can pick up rope from a hardware or variety store and cheap frames are also pretty easy to come by these days. Just be sure to double check the back of your frames to ensure that fittings and fastenings are satisfactory quality. Flimsy fastenings can be tricky to open, or will break easily.
  • You could experiment with different techniques with the rope, such as plaiting or twisting it for a chunkier look.

2. Rope Lamp

Give an old lamp a new lease of life with this quick and stylish DIY makeover

This versatile, neutral rope base pairs well with any shade colour/design

Why we love it:

  • I think everyone has one of these types of lamps in a cupboard at home that is crying out for some DIY TLC.
  • A stylish lamp creates beautiful mood lighting and is an inexpensive, versatile accessory for the home.
  • This lamp would make a great handmade gift for any home.
  • Brights, pastels, prints and plains – you could pair any different lamp shade with this base.
